Structuring a talk

The structures that work, the rule of three, and how to speak without notes.

The rule that comes before all the others

One talk, one idea.

If your audience were to keep only one sentence, which would it be? Write it down before you do anything else. If you cannot write it in one sentence, your talk is not ready, whatever the number of slides.

Everything else, examples, data, anecdotes, exists only to support that sentence.

The four structures that work

Problem, solution, evidence, action. The default structure, suited to eighty per cent of workplace situations. You name a problem the audience recognises, you propose a solution, you back it up, you ask for a decision.

Before, after, how. Suited to a case study or a first-hand account. Here is how it was, here is how it is now, here is the path between them.

Three pillars. Suited to conveying knowledge. One idea, three sub-sections of equal importance, a synthesis.
