Reading according to the textLesson16 minModule lesson
Six kinds of text, six speeds
Applying the same method to everything produces poor results on half of what you read.
The single-setting mistake
Most speed reading methods promise one speed. One, applied everywhere. That is precisely what makes them disappointing: a contract, a novel and a technical manual have nothing in common except being written down.
An effective reader does not read fast. They read at the speed the text deserves, which means deciding before starting.
The six settings
| Kind | Target speed | Setting | What you are after |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novel, narrative | 250 to 400 wpm | Full reading, light guide | The experience, not the information |
| News, blog | 500 to 700 | Skim then target | Two or three new facts |
| Work document | 400 to 600 | Three passes | The decisions and the numbers |
| Textbook, non-fiction | 300 to 500 | Preloading then passes | The structure and the arguments |
| Technical, scientific | 150 to 300 | Slow reading, rereading accepted | Exact understanding |
