The Memory PalaceLesson19 minModule lesson

Place, walk, clear: the life cycle of a palace

How to put the images down, avoid collisions, and above all how to reuse a palace without mixing two sets of content.

Placing: the four rules of deposit

  1. One image per station. Never two. If you have more items than stations, enlarge the palace or group the items into one composite image.
  2. The image interacts with the station. Do not set the object beside it: it has to break, burn, invade or transform the station. The fridge does not contain a whale, it bursts under the pressure of the whale.
  3. Constant point of view. You always enter the room from the same side. The brain uses viewpoint as a retrieval cue.
  4. Two to three seconds of pause per station. Non-negotiable. It is the minimum fixation time.

Walking: the review

After placing, immediately do one verification pass, twenty to thirty seconds for twenty stations. That pass detects weak images, the ones where you hesitate.

For every hesitation, strengthen the image, bigger, louder, more absurd, rather than repeating it. Repetition does not repair bad encoding.
