Your map library: filing, finding, linking
How a hundred maps become a system you can consult rather than a pile.
The moment the system tips over
Around the thirtieth map, a problem appears: you know you mapped something, but you no longer know where. From that point on, producing more without filing more just feeds a pile.
Three piles, and nothing else
Three categories are enough, and you have to resist the temptation to add more.
ACTIVE. Anything concerning a current project or subject. Physically to hand, on the desk or in a display folder. REFERENCE. Anything finished but useful later: syntheses, book maps, methods. Filed, not to hand. ARCHIVE. Anything closed. Kept without being finely sorted.
A map moves pile, it never gets duplicated. That is the rule that stops the system inflating.
