Maintenance: the phase everyone skips
Why eighty per cent of weight loss is regained, and how not to be part of it.
The real figure
Most people who lose weight regain a large part of it within two to five years. That is not a failure of willpower: it is a failure of phase.
Almost nobody plans maintenance. You plan the loss, you reach it, then you go back to the way you ate before, which is precisely what produced the weight before.
Coming out of a deficit, week by week
Do not jump straight back to maintenance: a reverse diet means climbing back gradually.
Weeks 1 and 2: plus a hundred kilocalories a day, mostly as carbohydrate. Weeks 3 and 4: plus a hundred again. Weeks 5 and 6: plus a hundred, until you reach recalculated maintenance.
Throughout the climb, keep weighing and tracking the averages. A rise of one to two kilos is expected, and it is water and glycogen. Beyond two and a half kilos, hold steady for two weeks.
