Why resistance training comes first in a deficit
What strength work preserves during weight loss, and why cardio alone fails.
The question that decides everything
Losing ten kilos can mean two radically different things.
Case A: minus ten kilos, of which seven are fat and three are muscle. The scale is happy. Metabolism has fallen. The shape is softer. Regain is near certain.
Case B: minus ten kilos, all ten of them fat, with muscle preserved. The scale reads the same. Metabolism is intact. The shape is transformed. The weight holds.
It is the composition of the loss that counts, not its size. And what decides that composition is two things only: protein, covered in the previous chapter, and resistance training.
The preservation signal
In a deficit, the body looks to get rid of what costs it. Muscle is expensive: it uses energy at rest. With no demand placed on it, it becomes a logical candidate for elimination.
Resistance training sends the opposite signal: this muscle is being used, keep it.
