The ninety-second start-up ritual
The conditioned sequence that replaces motivation: six gestures, always the same, in the same order.
The idea
You do not need motivation. You need a conditioned trigger: a sequence so repetitive that your brain switches over automatically, just as it falls asleep when you follow your evening routine.
The ritual has to be short, or you will abandon it, identical every time, or it conditions nothing, and ended by the start of the task, or it becomes elegant procrastination.
The ritual, ninety seconds
0 to 15 s, physically preparing the space. A clear desk: only what the task needs. Visual clutter is a measurable attentional load. This gesture is also the first link in the conditioning.
15 to 25 s, write the single task. On a piece of paper, in one sentence, with an action verb: write section 2, the three arguments. Stick it beside the screen. That paper is your point of return after every lapse.
25 to 35 s, set the timer. The length of the block, visible. The countdown creates a frame with an end.
35 to 70 s, box breathing. Four cycles of four-four-four-four. Moderate, stable activation.
