Being good at conversation: the five engines
How to start, keep going and end a conversation without hunting for something to say.
The initial misunderstanding
I do not know what to say rests on a mistake about roles. You think you have to produce interesting content. In reality, you have to get the other person producing.
People reputed to be good at conversation do not talk more than anyone else. They ask better questions and they actually listen. That is all, and it is learnable.
Engine 1: shared context
The simplest and most effective opening is what the two of you are living through right now.
Do you know many people here? Is this your first time? Did you like this morning's talk?
You do not need to be brilliant. An ordinary opening about shared context works better than a prepared witty line, which always sounds prepared.
