Paper or digital: what each medium does better

The real deciding criterion, which is not the one people expect.

A false debate, a real rule

The question is not which one is superior. The two media do different things, and the deciding criterion is simple: am I producing, or am I consulting?

You produce on paper. You consult on digital.

Why produce on paper

Three reasons, all documented.

Handwriting slows you down. Writing by hand is slower than typing, which forces you to restate instead of transcribing. That processing is precisely what produces memorisation; Mueller and Oppenheimer's work on lecture note-taking shows the effect on conceptual understanding.

The space is constrained. A sheet of A4 forces you to choose. An infinite canvas forces nothing, and a digital map spreads out until it is unreadable.

Spatial memory gets a grip. You remember that a piece of information was bottom right. On a canvas that scrolls and zooms, that positional information no longer exists.

The rest is part of the Mind Mapping & Note-Taking module
