When it all falls apart: the recovery protocol
What to do after three weeks with no review, an exceptional workload, or a holiday.
The system will stop, that is expected
A house move, an urgent project, an illness, two weeks of holiday: every planning system gets interrupted. That is not a failure, it is a feature.
What distinguishes the people who last for years is not that they never stop. It is that they know how to restart in forty-five minutes, instead of starting from scratch or giving up.
Why people give up at the restart
Because they try to catch up on everything. They open an inbox with three hundred items, decide it needs a whole day, do not have that day, and put it off until the following Monday. Two months go by.
The solution is to catch up on nothing.
The recovery protocol, forty-five minutes
Step 1, bankruptcy, 5 minutes. Everything more than three weeks old goes into a single folder named maybe sort later. You will not go back to it, and nothing bad will happen. Whatever genuinely mattered will come back through another channel, a chaser, a reminder, a conversation.
