The four enemies of concentration

Dopamine loop, cognitive load, decision fatigue, environment: identifying which one is destroying you.

Enemy number 1: the dopamine loop

Dopamine is not the pleasure molecule: it is the molecule of anticipated reward. It rises before the reward, and it rises all the more when the reward is unpredictable.

That is exactly the structure of a feed, an inbox, a notification: you do not know what is behind it. This variable-ratio reinforcement mechanism is the most powerful one psychology knows; it is the mechanism of slot machines.

Against that, willpower is the wrong tool. The right tool is friction: making access expensive. Phone in another room, and not just face down on the desk. The measured difference between the two situations is considerable: the mere visible presence of a phone degrades cognitive performance, even switched off.

Enemy number 2: parasitic cognitive load

Your working memory holds about four items at once. Every open loop occupies one: remember to call the dentist, the message I have to send, did I shut the window.

A cluttered mind has no room left for the task. That is why the Organisation & Planning module is the direct complement to this one: an external capture system frees working memory.

Immediate fix. A two-minute brain dump before each block. Everything crossing your mind goes on paper. The paper will remember it for you.
