The Major System: taming numbersLesson19 minFree access

The phonetic code, 0 to 9

The digit-to-sound conversion system invented in the seventeenth century and still used in competition.

Why numbers are impossible to retain

A digit has no shape, no smell, no sound of its own, no story. It is a pure symbol. The Major System solves this in two steps: digit to consonant sound, then sound to word, and therefore to image.

The conversion table

Digit Sounds Why it sticks
0 S, Z, soft C Zero starts with the Z sound
1 T, D t has one downstroke
2 N n has two downstrokes
3 M m has three downstrokes
4 R four ends in R
5 L L is 50 in Roman numerals
6 J, SH, CH, soft G 6 looks like a reversed G
7 K, hard C, hard G, Q Two 7s back to back draw a K
8 F, V A cursive f looks like an 8
9 P, B 9 is a mirrored P

Absolute rule: only consonant sounds count. Vowels, and the letters W, H and Y, are free and exist only to make the word pronounceable.

Conversion examples

  • 34 gives M, R, so mower, mare, hammer.
  • 82 gives F or V, then N, so fan, fawn, van.
  • 07 gives S, K, so sock, sack, ski.
  • 921 gives P, N, T, so paint, pint, pundit.
  • 1492 gives T, R, P, N, so tarpon, the fish.

You work in sounds, not in letters

This is the main source of error in the first three days. Four cases to absorb.

Silent letters never count. Knee is N alone, so 2: the K is silent. Lamb is L plus M, so 53: the B is silent. Knight is N plus T, so 21.

Double letters producing one sound count once. Apple is P plus L, so 95, not 995. Butter is B, T, R, so 914.

X is K plus S, so 70. Taxi is T, K, S, so 170.

QU is the K sound, so 7. Quay is 7. Queen is K plus N, so 72.

The hard and soft trap, C and G

English pronounces both two ways, and the code follows the pronunciation, never the spelling.

Car is hard C plus R, so 74. Cell is S plus L, so 05. Goat is hard G plus T, so 71. Gem is soft G, treated as J, plus M, so 63.

When in doubt, say the word out loud: your mouth settles it faster than your reasoning.

Progressive training

Series A, digit to sound. Recite the table in order, then out of order, until you answer in under a second. Three times a day for two days is enough to automate it.

Series B, word to number. Convert: table, mouse, cinema, cheese, guitar, mountain, umbrella, television.

Answers. Table gives T, B, L, so 195. Mouse gives M, S, so 30. Cinema gives S, N, M, so 023. Cheese gives CH, S, so 60. Guitar gives hard G, T, R, so 714. Mountain gives M, N, T, N, so 3212. Umbrella gives M, B, R, L, so 3945. Television gives T, L, V, the ZH of vision, then N, so 15862.

Series C, number to word. Find a concrete word for 15, 27, 39, 44, 58, 63, 71, 86 and 92.

The next lesson turns this drill into a permanent system: the 100 images from 00 to 99.

Diagram

The ten sounds, and why they are easy to retain

0: S, ZZero

The word zero starts with the Z sound

1: T, DOne downstroke

t has a single vertical stroke

2: NTwo downstrokes

n has two

3: MThree downstrokes

m has three

4: RFour

The word ends in R

5: LRoman L

L stands for 50

6: J, SH, CHReversed G

6 looks like a G turned around

7: K, hard CTwo 7s

Back to back, they draw a K

8: F, VCursive f

The loop of a written f looks like an 8

9: P, BMirrored P

9 is a P flipped over

Digit · Visual or logical hook

None of these hooks is arbitrary, which is why the table automates in two days and never leaves you.

Exercises2

Understanding produces no change. These exercises are what makes the difference: each one has a measurable success criterion.

Automating the table in two days

Answer in under a second both ways, digit to sound and sound to digit.

Equipment : Ten folded slips numbered 0 to 9, or the module's online trainer.

  1. 1.Recite the table in order, three times, out loud.
  2. 2.Draw the slips at random: you name the matching sound.
  3. 3.Reverse it: someone names a sound, you give the digit.
  4. 4.Run three three-minute sessions across the day, at least two hours apart.

Success looks like : Ten correct answers in a row, both ways, each in under a second.

The classic mistake : Revising the table in one long session. Three short spaced sessions automate it markedly faster, which is the spacing effect.

2
Consolidating12 min

Twenty conversions, both ways

Move from reasoning letter by letter to reading the word directly in sounds.

  1. 1.Convert the eight words of series B into numbers, then check against the answers in the lesson.
  2. 2.Convert the nine numbers of series C into concrete words.
  3. 3.Take three words containing a C or a G and settle hard against soft out loud.
  4. 4.Take three words containing a silent letter and check that you are not counting it.

Success looks like : Seventeen correct conversions out of twenty, including the three C or G cases.

The classic mistake : Counting written letters instead of spoken sounds. Knee is 2, not 21: always say the word before deciding.

Going further : Convert the phone numbers of three people close to you, then your own number plate.
