Light, caffeine, temperature, hydration, movement
The five physiological variables that decide your capacity to focus before you even sit down.
1. Light, the most profitable setting
In the morning. Ten to twenty minutes of outdoor light within an hour of waking, without sunglasses, but never looking directly at the sun. Even on an overcast day, outdoors delivers about ten thousand lux where a well-lit interior delivers three hundred.
The effect: a phase advance of the circadian clock, a clean morning cortisol peak, better daytime alertness. And above all, the start of the countdown that will produce melatonin fourteen to sixteen hours later.
In the evening. Warm, low light after 8 pm. Screens count for less than ceiling lighting, but both count.
While working. Cool light, between 4000 and 6500 kelvin, and bright enough, supports alertness. A dark office in the afternoon is an invitation to drowsiness.
2. Caffeine: the window and the delay
Three rules that change everything.
Delay it by sixty to ninety minutes after waking. Residual adenosine on waking is low and cortisol is already high. An immediate coffee adds to an existing peak and causes the 11 am slump. By delaying, you cover the real dip.
